Following the recent bankruptcy filing of chatbot startup Character.AI, legal filings indicate that Disney has agreed to make employment offers to at least 60 members of the startup's workforce. The positions are expected to carry an estimated total of $60 million in annual compensation.
Workforce transition
The vast majority of Character.AI employees who received offers from Disney have reportedly accepted them. This development follows the appointment of former Character.AI CEO Karandeep Anand as Disney's first Chief Technology Officer. Previously, the entertainment giant had agreed to acquire select assets from the startup for $20 million.
Underlying pressures
Despite maintaining a large and active user base, Character.AI struggled with high operational costs. The startup also faced significant legal and regulatory challenges, including a lawsuit filed by the mother of a 14-year-old boy and ongoing government investigations concerning child safety.
