TypeSafe AI, the developer behind the non-text artificial intelligence model Jev, has raised 870 million dollars in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. The financing values the startup at 7.5 billion dollars, coming only weeks after the September 15 release of its flagship product.
The round also saw participation from Sequoia and existing investor DCVC. According to the startup, approximately one third of Fortune 500 companies have already adopted the model.
Architecture and Approach
Although Jev relies on a transformer architecture, it functions differently from conventional large language models. Rather than generating natural language text or source code, Jev outputs probabilities that the company describes as calibrated decisions.
TypeSafe positions this design as an alternative for task automation. By avoiding traditional token generation, the model operates with lower token usage and increased speed compared to standard language models.
Leadership and Origins
TypeSafe AI was established in 2024 by co-founders Diogo Almeida, Sasha Sheng, and Erik Gafni. Almeida previously worked as a researcher at OpenAI, while Sheng served as a research engineer at Meta, and Gafni brings experience as an engineer and entrepreneur.
