Rather than requiring users to download and check a dedicated application, a growing number of artificial intelligence assistants operate entirely through ordinary text messages. Users can communicate with these agents using natural language to remember context, connect with existing software services, and complete complex real-world tasks.
General-Purpose Assistants
Several platforms focus on broad personal productivity across standard messaging apps.
- Caddy: Available in public beta since April 2026, it operates via iMessage and RCS, connecting to calendars and conversations to automate reminders and research.
- Folk: Operating on a private cloud computer, Folk runs via iMessage, WhatsApp, and Telegram. It executes multi-step tasks, handles email, and manages bookings.
- Instinct: Highlighted by a $10 billion valuation following a September 2026 funding round, Instinct provides dedicated email addresses and voice support to perform tasks independently.
- Iris: Powered by the Hermes agent, Iris functions through iMessage to manage delegated tasks and provide proactive follow-ups.
- Martin: Offering a general assistant across SMS, phone, WhatsApp, and Slack, Martin manages communications for a starting price of $21 per month.
- Poke: Launched in March 2026, Poke became the first AI agent approved for Apple Messages for Business before its acquisition by Cognition.
