Superhuman acquires Fathom to expand its productivity suite

Email client Superhuman is expanding its product ecosystem by acquiring Y Combinator-backed meeting notetaker Fathom. Rather than continuing to build its own internal meeting tool, Superhuman chose to integrate an established product to support its broader strategy of centering its suite around artificial intelligence.

The shift toward meeting context

Modern productivity platforms aim to automate work, moving beyond simple user-triggered prompts toward systems that can proactively start tasks. Meeting transcripts, action items, and discussion context are central to this transition. By incorporating a dedicated notetaker, platforms like Superhuman can better bridge the gap between spoken conversations and digital execution.

Founded in 2020, Fathom has raised over $30 million in funding and achieved a valuation of $94 million in 2024 according to PitchBook data. Its investors include the Zoom Apps Fund, Telescope Partners, BoxOne Ventures, and Maven Ventures, alongside notable individual backers such as Reddit CEO Steve Huffman, former Twitch CEO Emmett Shear, and Cruise co-founder Kyle Vogt. The notetaker's generous free plan helped drive adoption, accumulating over 400,000 monthly active users and recording meetings for more than 1 million people.

Strategic integration

Superhuman tested a notetaker internally earlier this year but ultimately decided that acquiring a mature platform was more efficient. Shishir Mehrotra, Superhuman's CEO, noted that internal testing highlighted the technical complexity required to build a reliable meeting recording and transcription tool. Fathom CEO Richard White pointed to Superhuman's expansive user base and existing platform infrastructure as key factors in the agreement, noting that operating independently would have required building many features already present in Superhuman's ecosystem.

Superhuman currently offers an email client, a documents application, a calendar, a database solution, and an AI agent builder platform. With a meeting notetaker integrated at the center, the platform aims to enable its AI agents to extract insights, draft emails, update records, and schedule follow-up actions directly from meeting data.
