Stripe has finalized an agreement to acquire OpenRouter, a prominent AI gateway startup. The deal follows earlier reports that the two companies were engaged in acquisition discussions, culminating in a final valuation exceeding seven billion dollars.
OpenRouter operates a service that allows customers to route tasks across a wide variety of artificial intelligence models, balancing specific performance requirements and budget constraints. Rather than remaining locked into a single provider, users gain a unified access point to manage their model consumption.
Growth and funding history
The acquisition comes shortly after a period of rapid expansion for the startup. In May, OpenRouter announced that it had successfully raised a one hundred thirteen million dollar Series B funding round, which valued the company at one point three billion dollars at the time. Backers in that round included prominent venture capital firms such as Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.
During that funding announcement, OpenRouter Chief Executive Officer Alex Atallah characterized the platform as the financial infrastructure equivalent of Stripe for the artificial intelligence ecosystem, emphasizing its role in preventing vendor lock-in.

Platform scale
OpenRouter has established a massive user base since its inception. The platform currently claims to serve eight million global users while providing programmatic access to more than four hundred distinct artificial intelligence models.
Neither company has formally detailed how OpenRouter will be integrated into Stripe's existing product suite, though the consolidation highlights the growing convergence between financial rails and artificial intelligence infrastructure.
