SpaceX completes acquisition of AI coding startup Cursor

AI coding startup Cursor has officially become a part of SpaceX, following an announcement published on the Cursor blog. The closure marks the finalization of a corporate consolidation path that began earlier in the year.

Background of the Agreement

Elon Musk's SpaceX announced an initial deal in April designed to foster joint technology development, which included a specific option for SpaceX to acquire Cursor for $60 billion. Following SpaceX's transition to a public company two months later, both entities confirmed they were moving forward to complete the purchase.

Infrastructure and Compute

In the official closure announcement, Cursor emphasized the strategic advantage of gaining access to SpaceX's computing infrastructure. SpaceX currently rents out similar capacity to major AI players including Anthropic and Google, though the company has also faced environmental scrutiny regarding data center operations.

Cursor stated that integration with SpaceX provides access to what it describes as the largest fleet of GPUs globally.

Future Outlook

"SpaceX is building the computing capacity needed to scale intelligence far beyond what exists today," the company noted in a statement. "Cursor will be one place where that intelligence becomes useful."

The partnership positions Cursor to utilize vast computational resources as it continues to develop coding assistants and intelligence tools at scale.
