French artificial intelligence laboratory Mistral AI announced that it has raised three billion euros, approximately three point five eight billion dollars, at a post-money valuation of more than twenty-one billion euros, or roughly twenty-four point three nine billion dollars.
Funding and investors
The Series D round was led by Samsung Electronics, alongside the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund and existing investor PSG Equity as co-leads. Additional backing came from a diverse group of international and American investors, including a16z, Nvidia, Salesforce Ventures, Advent, BlackRock, and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Mistral stated that this represents the largest equity fundraising round ever completed by a European technology company. The capital will be allocated toward scaling compute capacity, building infrastructure, accelerating commercial growth, and expanding the lab's international footprint.
Strategic positioning
The funding arrives as Mistral pursues a measured shift in strategy to address regional dependencies on United States technology. The laboratory aims to build one gigawatt of compute capacity in Europe by the year 2030.
In August, the company introduced features allowing customers to select the geographic regions where their queries are processed. It has also begun hosting third-party open-weight models, including systems from Chinese developers, to position itself as a flexible services provider that emphasizes customer control.
Despite these global offerings and operations spanning twenty countries, the laboratory maintains its focus on frontier research as the foundation for its infrastructure and products. While the company retains a strategic partnership with Microsoft and works with global entities, its emphasis on data sovereignty and regional control continues to resonate with European governments and corporations alike.
