French artificial intelligence company Mistral has released the model weights — the numerical values that form the core of a trained artificial intelligence system — for its trillion-parameter open-source model, Mistral Large 4. Nicknamed “Le Chonk,” the system was initially introduced earlier in the month.
The release allows enterprises and government agencies to download and run the software within their own local systems. This approach provides organizations with direct control over their infrastructure, ensuring that advanced intelligence cannot be cut off by an external provider.
Mistral highlights cybersecurity as a primary application for the new release. According to the company, organizations can use the model to identify, coordinate, and respond in real time to major security incidents across code and information technology infrastructure.
Company leadership notes that the model achieves high performance while using fewer resources than comparable systems. Mistral reports that its model uses 47 percent fewer tokens per task than the Chinese open-weight competitor GLM-5.3, while matching its overall performance.
Availability
The model is currently available for download on Hugging Face, a platform for sharing artificial intelligence models and datasets, and can also be accessed via an application programming interface, which allows different software systems to communicate with one another.
Mistral executives emphasize that releasing the model weights is intended to empower organizations to defend their digital environments independently, offering a secure tool to counter evolving threats in the digital landscape.
