Microsoft has announced upcoming updates for its Copilot artificial intelligence assistant that will give the software deeper access to local files and system controls on Windows personal computers.
Hybrid Intelligence
The new capabilities are part of an approach Microsoft calls hybrid intelligence, where applications use a combination of local device processing and cloud-based models to complete tasks. During a stage demonstration, Microsoft executive Jacob Andreou showed an AI assistant tool using hybrid intelligence to help with taxes. The assistant searched local folders to locate documents, renamed the files, combined them into a compressed archive, and drafted an email to an accountant with the attachment.
Timeline and Search Updates
Features built on hybrid intelligence are scheduled to arrive for Copilot users over the next couple of months. Additionally, Microsoft previewed a redesigned Windows search experience. Starting this fall on Windows 11 computers, users will be able to perform quick actions directly from the search bar, such as adjusting microphone volume with an in-line slider, enabling dark mode, or sending text messages.
