Meta introduces model context protocol server for WhatsApp business

Meta has announced that developers can now use artificial intelligence agents to set up and manage WhatsApp Business messaging. The update aims to remove much of the administrative work previously required to onboard companies to the messaging platform.

Streamlining business setup

Previously, setting up business messaging required developers to switch between multiple tools, including the Developer Console, Business Manager, API references, and code editors. Under the new workflow, developers can chat directly with their preferred AI coding assistant to describe what needs to be done.

The AI agent handles several foundational tasks during setup. These include creating the company account, verifying phone numbers, registering for access to the Cloud API, and checking terms of service compliance.

Expanding developer capabilities

This functionality is enabled by the WhatsApp Business Tools MCP. This uses the Model Context Protocol — an open standard that connects AI systems to external data sources and tools — to link coding assistants directly to the platform.

Beyond initial configuration, businesses can use the AI agent to create and edit messaging templates. The agent can also test webhooks and monitor background statuses such as payment methods and business verification.

Meta also noted that its existing Meta Social Technologies MCP can be used alongside the new server to search documentation, discover API endpoints, and troubleshoot technical errors during the setup process.
