Google brings Model Context Protocol support to Google Home

Smart home owners can now connect artificial intelligence agents to their devices through a new update from Google. On Wednesday, Google rolled out early access to its Model Context Protocol server for the Google Home ecosystem.

What is the Model Context Protocol?

The Model Context Protocol, often called MCP, is a technical standard that lets artificial intelligence agents securely work with external tools and data sources. With this new integration, any artificial intelligence agent that supports the protocol can connect to Google Home devices and access event histories.

Supported agents include Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity.

Capabilities and Setup

Users can use plain language instructions to perform everyday tasks, such as:

• Reviewing camera summaries and monitoring household activity
• Controlling connected hardware like thermostats, doorbells, and light bulbs
• Building custom smart home dashboards

Setting up the connection requires creating a Google Cloud project, configuring it to use Home MCP, and providing the configuration details to the chosen agent.
