New animation controls
Previously, creating animated files required external tools or multiple workaround steps. With the latest update, users can prompt ChatGPT to generate a GIF—such as asking for a cat dancing—and immediately access controls to modify the animation speed or inspect and edit individual frames before sharing.
Alongside GIF support, the Images 2.6 release delivers faster image generation across the platform. OpenAI reports that users now generate over 4 billion images per week across ChatGPT and its application programming interface — the software bridge that allows external programs to communicate with the model. This figure represents an increase from the 3 billion images per week reported in September.
Availability
The Images 2.6 model is rolling out to all ChatGPT and Codex users across web, desktop, and mobile applications. Additionally, OpenAI is launching GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst in its API to provide faster and higher-quality image generation for developers.
